ST. ANTHONY THE GREAT

VARIATION IN TODAY'S DIVINE LITURGY

At the entrance (Service Book page 97):

1.     TROPARION OF THE RESURRECTION - Tone 7:  Thou didst shatter death with Thy cross, and didst open Paradise to the thief.  Thou didst change the sadness of the ointment bearers into joy, and Thou didst charge Thine Apostle to proclaim a warning that Thou hast risen, O Christ, our God, granting to the people of the world Thy great mercy.

2.     THE ENTRANCE HYMN:  O Come, let us worship and fall down before Christ.  O son of God, who art risen from the dead save us who sing unto thee:  Alleluia.

3.     Repeat #1 above.

4.     TROPARION OF ST. ANTHONY - Tone 4:  Thou didst become like the zealous Elijah in his condition, and followed John the Baptist in his upright ways, becoming a dweller in the wilderness and an establisher of the universe by thy prayer, O Father Anthony.  Wherefore, intercede thou with Christ God to save our souls.

5.     TROPARION OF ST. GEORGE - Tone 4:  As deliverer of captives and defender of the poor, healer of the infirm, champion of kings, victorious, Great Martyr George, intercede with Christ our God for our soul's salvation.

6.     KONTAKION OF THE PRESENTATION OF OUR LORD- Tone 1:  Thou, O Christ God, who by thy Birth, dist sanctify the Virgin's womb, and as is meet, didst bless Simeon's arms, and didst also come to save us; preserve thy fold in wars, and confirm them who thou didst love, for thou alone art the Lover of mankind.

Prokeimenon:  Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of his saints.

What shall I render to the Lord for all he has given me?

EPISTLE:  The reading is from Saint Paul's Letter to the Hebrews.  (Chapter 13:17-21.)

BRETHREN, obey your leaders and submit to them; for they are keeping watch over your souls, as men who will have to give account.  Let them do this joyfully, and not sadly, for that would be of no advantage to you. Pray for us, for we are sure that we have a clear conscience, desiring to act honorably in all things, I urge you the more earnestly to do this in order that I may be restored to you the sooner. Now may the God of peace who brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus, the great shepherd of the sheep, by the blood of the eternal covenant, equip you with everything good that you may do his will, working in you that which is pleasing in his sight, through Jesus Christ; to whom be glory forever and ever.  Amen.

THE HOLY GOSPEL ACCORDING TO ST. LUKE

(Chapter 19:1-10.)

At that time:  He entered Jericho and was passing through.  And there was a man named Zacchaeus; he was a chief tax collector, and rich.  And he sought to see who Jesus was, but could not, on account of the crowd because he was small of stature.  So he ran on ahead and climbed up into a sycamore tree to see him, for he was to pass that way.  And when Jesus came to the place, he looked up and said to him, "Zacchaeus make haste and come down; for I must stay at your house today."  So he made haste and came down and received him joyfully.  And when they saw it they all murmured, "He has gone in to be the guest of a man who is a sinner."  And Zacchaeus stood and said to the Lord, "Behold, Lord, the half of my goods I give to the poor; and if I have defrauded any one of anything, I restore it fourfold."  And Jesus said to him, "Today salvation has come to this house, since he also is a son of Abraham.  For the son of man came to seek and to save the lost."

Special note:  Except for those who are elderly and/or disabled, please remain standing during Holy Communion.

NEXT WEEK'S HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENT: II Timothy 3:10-15; Luke 18:10-14.
