VARIATION IN TODAY'S DIVINE LITURGY

At the entrance (Service Book page 97):

1) TROPARION OF THE RESURRECTION - Tone 8: Thou didst come down from the heights, O Compassionate One, that we might be delivered from suffering. Thou didst submit to be placed in the tomb for three days. Thou art our life and our resurrection, O Lord, glory to Thee.

2) THE ENTRANCE HYMN: O Come, let us worship and fall down before Christ. O son of God, who art risen from the dead save us who sing unto thee: Alleluia.

3)      Repeat #1 above.

4) TROPARION OF THE FORTY MARTYRS OF SEBASTE - Tone 1: By the reason of the sufferings the saints endured out of love for thee, we implore thee, O Lord and Lover of Mankind, to deliver us from all our pains.

5) TROPARION OF ST. GEORGE - Tone 4: As deliverer of captives and defender of the poor, healer of the infirm, champion of kings, victorious, Great Martyr George, intercede with Christ our God for our soul's salvation.

6) KONTAKION FOR CHEESE FARE SUNDAY - Tone 6: O you who are the source of wisdom and understanding, who instruct the ignorant and champion the needy: Strengthen our hearts and make us understand. Put words on our lips, O word of God, for we will not prevent our lips from crying out to you, O most merciful Lord: Have mercy on us in your compassion, for we have fallen.

Prokeimenon:  Sing praises to our God, sing praises.

Clap your hands, all you nations.

EPISTLE:  The reading is from St. Paul to the Romans.    (Chapters 13:11-14; 14:1-4.)

BRETHREN, salvation is nearer to us now than when we first believed; the night is far gone, the day is at hand.  Let us then cast off the works of darkness and put on the armor of light; let us conduct ourselves becomingly as in the day, not in reveling and drunkenness, not in debauchery and licentiousness, not in quarreling and jealousy.  But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to gratify its desires.

As for the man who is weak in faith, welcome him, but not for disputes over opinion.  One believes he may eat anything, while the weak man eats only vegetables.  Let not him who eats despise him who abstains, and let not him who abstains pass judgment on him who eats; for God has welcomed him.  Who are you to pass judgment on the servant of another?  It is before his own master that he stands or falls.  And he will be upheld, for God is able to make him stand.

THE HOLY GOSPEL ACCORDING TO ST. MATTHEW   (Chapter 6:14-21.)

The Lord said, "If you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father also will forgive you; but if you do not forgive men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses."

"And when you fast, do not look dismal, like the hypocrites, for they disfigure their faces that their fasting may be seen by men.  Truly, I say to you, they have their reward.  But when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face, that your fasting may not be seen by men but by your Father who sees in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly."

"Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and rust consume and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust consumes, and where thieves do not break in and steal.  For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also."

Special note:  Except for those who are elderly and/or disabled, please remain standing during Holy Communion.

NEXT WEEK'S HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENT:  Hebrews 11:24-26, 32-40; John 1:43-51.
