Sanctification of the human body

Man is the temple of the living God. This is an apostolic teaching in our church, which means that just as the grace of God, the grace of the Holy Spirit dwells in the church, the same applies to the human body and we are the temples of the living God. We call God living because He is not isolated somewhere in heaven and we simply believe in and accept Him, because He resides in us, and we are His temple. Of course, St. Paul does not mean that a part of existence is the temple of God, but rather that the whole person is destined to become the temple of God and when that is achieved it becomes reality. This is the reason why we show great respect and honor to the entire human person.

When we honor the saints of the Church, who are people who have affirmed that they are truly temples of the living God, and have kept His commandments and found the truth, we are not honoring their spirit or their teaching, not even their mind alone. We honor the saints as perfect human beings, persons sanctified in all their soul and body. That is why we venerate the holy relics of the saints in the Church and their bones, which received the grace of the Holy Spirit, and they are temples of the living God. That is why we Orthodox Christians do not simply honor relics as we honor our ancestors but embrace the relics and objects of saints and holy icons because we truly believe that in this way, we communicate with the grace of the Holy Spirit acquired by these saints. Of course, they not only acquired it in this life, but they also augmented it now, as they live in the presence of God.

It is difficult for people in the West to understand the reverence we Orthodox Christians feel for the saints when we venerate their holy relics. In orthodox Christianity, everything is around the face of the saint, because exaltation works on the whole human being in the saints and embraces them completely. That is why, naturally, holiness is associated with external morality and perfection, but this is not all according to the Orthodox Church.

The saints are of course moral and upright, but the grace of the Holy Spirit transcends these human and worldly features and is the uncreated power of God that covers the entire being of a person so that it is sanctified. As mentioned in the Bible and the Acts of the Holy Apostles - and this is a clear answer to Jehovah's Witnesses and Protestants - the bleeding woman went and touched the edge of Christ's garment and was immediately healed. So, we ask: Could the dress have done the miracle? of course not. Christ was the agent, through the woman's faith. As stated in the Acts of the Apostles, as soon as the apostle Peter's shadow fell on the sick, they were healed. The cloaks of the apostles were even used to work miracles. By faith and the grace of the Holy Spirit, miracles were and still are. Naturally the saints do not perform miracles themselves:

And when St. Paul talks about the sins of the body, it is because it is our duty to keep our bodies pure and free from any impurity and any sin, because the body is destined to be glorified, the whole body destined for deification and sanctification.

When we are baptized, we are baptized whole, because we are sanctified as a united whole. For this reason, the relics of fallen Christians are always respected and well preserved. This is also the reason why the Orthodox Church does not accept cremation: not because Christ would have difficulty resurrecting the dead who were cremated, but because the funeral and burial of dead bodies is an expression of our belief that the body is sacred and destined for sanctification and glorification awaits the resurrection of the dead.
